Mental health charity calls for commitment from next London Mayor

A mental health charity is calling for commitment and support from candidates ahead of the mayoral election on May 2.

South East London Mind is calling on the next elected Mayor to address five key priorities to support people suffering with their mental health.

Chief executive of South East London Mind, Ben Taylor, said: “The upcoming London Mayoral election on May 2, is a crucial opportunity to prioritise the mental wellbeing of all Londoners.

“We envision a city that tackles the root causes of mental health issues, promotes early intervention, and ensures a diverse and well-funded mental health system”.

The charity’s five priorities urge candidates to tackle the challenges caused by the cost of living crisis, address health inequalities by making services more inclusive and accessible and support children and young people through a combination of support services and positive learning environments.

The charity is also asking mayoral candidates to recognise the importance of communities and community services and to improve access to good quality housing and increase the supply of affordable housing.

The charity – which is part of Mind London – has set up an open letter to the 13 mayoral candidates.

After launching in Bromley in 1954, South East London Mind now covers the boroughs of Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark and supports around 11,000 people every year.
