South east London is steeped in history from Greenwich and its maritime and royal links to some of its famous Victorian cemeteries and listed buildings.
But often we walk pass landmarks and buildings without knowing their full history which is why walking tours can be some of the best ways to really get under the skin of a place, even if you’re a local.
We’ve rounded up five of the best walking tours you can do in south east London and why we think you should add them to your to-do list:
Explore Nunhead Cemetery
First constructed in 1840, Nunhead Cemetery is known as one of the Magnificent Seven Victorian cemeteries in London and it hosts some incredible architecture.
Free guided tours (with an optional donation) are also available on selected days lasting around two hours with the next planned tours set to take place on July 30, August 27, September 24, and October 29.
No booking is necessary and guests will have a chance to explore some of the famous graves there.
Explore Deptford Creek at low tide
Don your waterproofs and wellies and explore Deptford Creek with the experts at Deptford’s Creekside Discovery Centre.
During low tide you’ll be able to take a walk to find out about the local nature and hear about Deptford’s history with a guide.
Tickets cost £15 for an adult and £10 for a child aged 8-17 years with the next walk planned for August 6.
Take a tour of Greenwich’s famous film locations
Greenwich has served as the backdrop for a number of films and TV shows over the years and you can take a tour to see where they were filmed.
You can take a 60-minute walking tour with Brit Movie Tours from outside the Royal Naval College Visitor Centre where you’ll be given a guided tour of some of Greenwich’s most famous landmarks.
Some of the films you’ll hear about on your tour include: The Crown, Sherlock Holmes, Pirates of the Caribbean and Thor: The Dark World.
The price of your ticket will also include entry to the Painted Hall, a guided tour of the Chapel of St Peter and St Paul and entry to the Victorian Skittle Alley.
Tickets cost £15 for an adult and are free for children aged up to 16.
Tours take place on Saturdays and Sundays at 12:30pm and 2:30pm from January until December and Friday to Monday at 12:30pm and 2:30pm from April until August.
Go Ghost hunting in Greenwich
Hosted by Get Your Guide, this spooky ghost tour gives you the chance to find out about some of the ghosts that are said to haunt Greenwich.
This hour and 30 minute tour starts from outside the Cutty Sark and gives you a glimpse into Greenwich’s past.
You will hear tales of the kings and Queens who’s spirits are rumoured to haun the grounds of Greenwich Park and stop of at famous landmarks like the Trafalgar Tavern and the Old Royal Naval College.
Tours cost £16 per person and can be booked on selected Saturdays from Septembmer until December.
Explore Dulwich’s history
Hosted by Footprints of London, this two-hour long tour will give you a glimpse into the vibrant location of Dulwich and how it has changed over the years.
The tour begins from outside North Dulwich station and will take you on a tour around the old villas, streets and shopping areas.
On you’re tour you’ll pass some famous landmarks, victorian buildings and learn about some of the people that lived there.
These tours only take place every so often with the next tour to be hosted on September 7.
