Inside the London home that’s the UK’s ‘most environmentally friendly’ but it will cost you £6,000 to rent

The four-bedroom won the Regional Award in 2019 from the Royal Institute of British Architects – but you’ll need £5,850 a month to live there

A four-bedroom home named Britain’s “most environmentally friendly” is now on the market to rent for just under £6,000 a month. The Camden property is the first-ever in the UK to achieve a net-zero certification and was designed for engineer and sustainable designer Max Fordham.

The gorgeous North London abode (now listed on Rightmove for £5,850pcm) is a mews house on a cobbled street and achieved its net-zero emissions for “operational and embodied carbon” thanks to a combination of triple-glazed windows and insulation. In fact, when he moved in, Fordham hosted a literal “housewarming” party that would keep the home heated for many months afterwards.

The home, on Camden Mews, has received many awards – some even after Fordham’s passing – which his son Finn Fordham said would have made his gather “chuckle”, the Daily Mail reports. Finn said: “[Max’s] lifetime was one devoted to beautiful design and engineering. Part of its legacy should be that the principle behind the house is emulated around the world.”

Thanks to its ability to retain solar heat through its triple-glazed windows, the house does not require any non-renewable energy. The light and spacious property features a roof-mounted PV array which accounts for 25 per cent of the home’s energy demand, while the rest is supplied by renewable sources.

Naturally, any building produces carbon emissions, however, Fordham’s team kept these down to a minimum, using concrete with low carbon cement replacement, alongside many natural materials, including timber for the roof structure, window frames, and façade.
