The Herd: the Pangbourne steak restaurant that’s a match for London’s Salt Bae

A Berkshire restaurant could be the perfect alternative to Salt Bae’s London steak house, at a fraction of the price.

The Turkish chef has been taking the culinary world and internet by storm, he originally reached fame as an internet meme five years ago.

After he launched Nusr-Et steakhouse in London, diners have been in shock at the bill, which is pretty much equivalent to a deposit on a house.

While the cost saw steak decorated with gold surpass £800, it makes you wonder what all of the fuss is about.

But The Herd Restaurant near Reading is a dead ringer for Salt Bae’s restaurant.

The restaurant at The Elephant Hotel, has food that is described as almost identical to Salt Bae’s famous London establishment and has an idyllic design with artwork, lush seating, and even an open log fire.

If the restaurant, in Church Road in Pangbourne, wasn’t special enough already, it is also extremely welcoming to our four-legged friends.

If you were to order a “Golden Tomahawk” at Salt Bae’s London restaurant then you’ll be set back a whopping £850, however, The Herd’s Tomahawk costs just £9.50 per 100g.

Approximately, a Tomahawk steak weighs around 1.2kg, which will cost you approximately £114 at The Herd.

It’s described as “full rib on the bone, a dramatic steak experience” and considering that the restaurant offers steaks matured on the bone for a minimum of 30 days that are “cooked to perfection” on a fire, it seems like a pretty close call, minus the gold, of course.

All steaks at Pangbourne restaurant are served with a side salad and thyme roast potatoes or chips, flat mushroom, balsamic roasted tomato and a choice of one of house rubs and sauces.

However, at Salt Bae’s London restaurant, “sauteed mushrooms” would set you back £12 alone, whilst the “crusted fries” would also cost £10.

The Herd Restaurant prides itself on using the “finest” and “freshest” local ingredients.

The website says: “The Herd steak restaurant which offers the ultimate steak experience with a bit of theatre with exquisite results or for a casual night with great food and wine.”

If you were to order wine at the Pangbourne restaurant, the most expensive bottle would cost you £295 for a bottle of the French champagne Armand De Brignac Brut Gold.

The expensive bill of Salt Bae’s London restaurant saw the price of Betrus 2003 Bt1 reach an extortionate £9,950 and £11 for a Red Bull.
