The south east London borough with the most crime at Christmas

ADT has analysed crime rates through December 2020-2022 to work out which London borough’s see the highest number of crimes and a south east London borough has made the top five.

In Southwark, the crime rate per 1,000 people was found to be 115.9.

Lambeth made number nine on the list with 108.08, the only other south London borough in the top ten.

A spokesperson for ADT said: “Social media may seem like the perfect place to share pictures of your Christmas tree full of presents, however, it is also the best time for crime to occur.

“Research has shown that there is an increased risk of theft and home burglaries taking place during the holidays, with robberies increasing a huge 38.11 per cent at this time of year.”

ADT has shared a list of four top tips  to keep your home safe this holiday season.

Keep the gifts a secret

Photos or videos of presents under the tree, being bought or wrapped can alert burglars that there are goods left in the property in the build-up to Christmas day.

ADT recommends keeping presents out of sight when taking photos of your tree.

Avoid giving strangers a tour of the house

You may be tempted to show off your Christmas decorations this year, but be careful not to show your property layout, as this could show possible entrances and exits.

ADT says that when sharing your decor, try to focus images of specific things, like the Christmas tree or table layout rather than the full room.

Avoid sharing your plans online

While it can be tempting to post online about going to visit family and friends for a week of festive fun, this alerts burglars at times your home will be empty.

To be safe, ADT says to leave location tags off of your posts and save some posts until you’re back home.

For extra security, you could always purchase smart plugs to turn lamps on and off while you’re away, giving the impression that someone is in.

Don’t show off your doors

When sharing photos of your wreath hanging on your door, or the lights outside your home be careful of showing the types of locks on your doors and the materials they’re made of.

Remember to take pictures and videos of your decorations close up so that thieves can’t collect information about your home.

Michele Bennett, General Manager at ADT Subscriber says: “At Christmas, when our houses are decorated, we can feel a bit more house proud, but it is important that we take the necessary steps to protect ourselves and our homes on social media.

“This festive season, be cautious whilst posting on social media by following our tips, and keep your family safe this Christmas.

“For a greater level of security, it is also essential to consider installing a fully integrated smart alarm system.

“Systems with add-ons such as cameras and doorbells provide an extra layer of protection which means you don’t have to worry about having an unexpected visitor, especially if you plan on going away for the holidays.”
