There was no mistaking the family home of Chloe Kelly when she scored the penalty yesterday which sent the Lionesses through to the quarter-finals of the women’s world cup.
St George’s flags decorate the front of the three-storey house while the screaming of her relatives inside signalled the winning goal at the end of a nail-biting match against Nigeria.
“It’s amazing — anything that’s thrown at us we show what we’re capable of,” Kelly said after the game. “This team is special . . . there’s more to come.”
Kelly first dreamt of winning the World Cup as a young girl
Despite the “no ball games” signs on the west London estate where Kelly grew up, she appeared to have a ball permanently at her feet. Playing with five older brothers “toughened her up”, recalled neighbours.
