Winscombe woman joins Just Stop Oil protests in London

The Just Stop Oil supporters will be slow marching in London every day this week to put more demand on the UK government to end all oil, gas and coal developments. It is hoped by the protesters that this could help stop global warming.

It is expected that some key London roads could be disrupted.

A first-time marcher, Laura Shepherd, 44, a graphic designer from Winscombe, said: “I’m here for my five year old son and his generation. This is not what I want to be doing, but I feel that I have no choice now, my heart aches for him. It’s critical that we stop carrying on with business as usual before it drives us to mass extinction.

“Our government and the North Sea Transition Authority will go down in history as traitors to us all – blatantly and shamelessly ignoring science in order to pursue profits and power. Even our government’s own advisors are despairing.

“We all need to make sacrifices about the way we live our lives now. We need to have tough conversations with ourselves and our loved ones.

“But most of all we need to come together and resist the madness of new oil and gas. Please step up and join us if you can. Our kids deserve better than what’s coming for them.”

Laura is joined by 86 supporters from the South West who are taking part, with the goal of bringing about fundamental change to how the government views energy. Last week, Earth experienced its hottest temperatures, breaking records four days in a row.

United Nations secretary general, Antonio Guterres, said: “Climate change is out of control.

“If we persist in delaying key measures that are needed, I think we are moving into a catastrophic situation.”

Since the Just Stop Oil campaign launched back in February 2022, there have been over 2,100 arrests and 138 people have spent time in prison, some of which without trial.

There are currently two supporters serving three year prison sentences for resisting oil, gas and coal.
