E-scooter filmed racing at over 50mph on busy London A-road

An e-scooter has been filmed travelling at more than 50mph on a busy road in London, much to the horror of viewers.

The video shows the rider wearing a hi-vis jacket while speeding along the A406 North Circular westbound carriageway on the A406 approaching Henlys Corner.

In the footage, the e-scooter can be seen overtaking cars in the left-hand lane.

The video was uploaded to social media by a person who says they were not the person who took the footage.

They wrote: “Up the A12 [sic] over 50mph! But he does have a hi-vis on.

“What have they let loose with these things?

“That’s not green – that’s dangerous to him and anyone he hits.

“Can you imagine if he came off at this speed?”

Later, they added: “Just to clarify, this footage was sent to me – it is not a London cabbie taking the footage.

“The reason I posted it was because of the ******** riding an e-scooter this fast on this road.”

Current TfL rules state that for licensed trial e-scooters, which have been available to rent in London since June 2021, riders must be over 18 and are intended to be driven at 12.5mph.

Social media users took to Twitter to complain about the footage.

One, concerned for the rider’s safety, wrote: “With those small wheels the tiniest pothole can throw you off. They simply stop dead in a six-inch hole.”

Others branded the decision “absolutely crazy.”

However, some viewers on social media found it more concerning that a motorist could have been recording the incident while driving.

One said the person was breaking the law by filming.

Another commented: “I’m afraid two wrongs do not make a right here. Absolutely crazy to witness with your eyes, but then to pick up your mobile phone to film it is also stupid.”

One viewer weighed up who was more in the wrong, writing: “On the one hand we have a 3kg scooter illegally using a dual carriageway, but otherwise under good control.

“On the other, we have a driver in a two-tonne car weaving because they are trying to film so not under good control.

“Which should the police prioritise…?”

E-scooters have been advertised to reach higher speeds and have grown in popularity across the UK.

Some models boast a top speed of 62mph but have the capability to reach 75mph, according to EScooter Nerds.

A Met Police spokesperson told the MailOnline: “In this case, we are currently unable to take action as the vehicle and the rider are unidentifiable. But private e-scooters cannot be used on a road because they are illegal.

“They, unlike fully licensed trial e-scooters, are not fit for the road and have consistently proven to be dangerous to those riding and other road users.”

The Met has seized 3,987 privately owned e-scooters this past year, MailOnline reports.

After one e-scooter exploded on a Tube train last month, the vehicles were banned from Transport for London services.

Another caught fire at Parsons Green in November last year.

This is one of 50 fires attended by London Fire Brigade services involving e-scooters and e-bikes prior to December 2021.

Fires are often caused by faulty third-party batteries.
