DLR: Electrical fault cuts off City Airport from Central London with disruption set for weeks

An electrical fault identified near Bank station is set to cause further disruption for DLR passengers in East and Central London, with no direct services between City Airport and The City.

The fault is caused by a faulty transformer, which means there is not enough power to keep the usual ten trains per hour service between Bank and Westferry/Canning Town moving. As an interim measure, some of those trains have been diverted to and from Mudchute or Stratford International instead. At Mudchute, there is a spare platform which is not normally used by passenger services.

It means that passengers are having to take the first train they can and change en-route, with no direct trains between Bank and Woolwich Arsenal. The remaining trains are also busier, which is compounded by the repeated removal of the passenger seating beyond the front set of doors and the last set of doors on each train to allow the one member of staff (Passenger Service Agent) to have room to keep socially distanced.

DLR trains usually run direct between Bank and Woolwich Arsenal, calling at London City Airport en-route

The fully automated DLR trains run using an electrified rail which requires 750 volts of direct current electrification. Transformers are pieces of equipment which help provide that electrification. By running fewer trains, this reduces the risk of one of them being stranded due to a power supply issue, which would then cause severe knock-on delays across the whole network.

An unusual positive from this incident is that DLR stations such as Crossharbour, Canary Wharf, West Ham and Stratford are getting more trains than usual. However, Bank station which is one of the stations being under-served is already more difficult to get to as a result of the 17 week closure of the Northern line between Moorgate and Kennington.

Any passengers who are delayed by 15 minutes or more on their DLR journeys can claim compensation after 48 hours, but within 28 days of the delay. TfL stresses that no journeys should be delayed by more than 15 minutes as trains are still running to all stations, with no service gaps of over 15 minutes even with the limited timetable.

Tom Page, TfL’s General Manager for DLR, said: “We are sorry customers have been disrupted as a result of power supply issues affecting services in and out of Bank station.

“We’re working to resolve this as soon as possible and have modified the DLR services from Bank to ensure customers still have a regular and reliable service. Customers should check their journey before they travel using our website or the TfL Go app. A good service continues to operate on the rest of the DLR.”
