Gove intervenes over Barbican demolition plans

The scheme drawn up by Sheppard Robson and Diller Scofidio + Renfro for the City of London – which includes demolition of the two 1970s landmarks – had been recommended to be approved by the City’s planning committee this morning (17 April).

But a last-minute intervention on Tuesday night (16 April) prevents the committee from approving the scheme while Gove considers calling the plans in.

Plans drawn up for the City of London Corporation feature 13 and 16-storey buildings on the London Wall West site on the edge of the Barbican estate.

Controversially, the scheme involves flattening the two 1970s buildings, both by architect Powell & Moya. More than 870 comments opposing the plans were submitted before a 6 April deadline, while only 14 comments were sent in support.

Councillors are currently debating the plans. Because of Gove’s intervention, the committee will not be able to grant planning permission today – though they could refuse it.
