Revealed: Man, 21, shot dead on upmarket West London street where houses sell for £1m was jailed in 2019 for his role in dismembering ‘brilliant’ jazz trumpeter

A 21-year-old man who was shot dead on an upmarket West London street was jailed in 2019 for his part in dismembering a jazz musician, MailOnline can reveal.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Comeragh Road in west Kensington on Easter Monday, just after 10pm.

The man – now named by police as Janayo Lucima – was found with gunshot wounds and treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

The investigation into Monday’s ‘horrific’ incident continues and no arrests have been made.

MailOnline can reveal that when he was 19, Lucima was convicted of helping to cover up the murder of ‘brilliant’ jazz trumpeter William Algar by buying bleach and J-cloths and running errands.

Days later, drug-dealer Ebrima Cham, 35, nicknamed the ‘Brim Reaper’, was also killed in a frenzied attack at a flat in Hounslow, west London.

Picturesque houses opposite the crime scene in Kensington are listed on Rightmove as being sold for around £1million – with expansive airy rooms, large windows and some having terraces overlooking the quiet area.

The houses in the desirable area are listed as recently selling for between £900,000 (a two-bedroom in 2018) and £915,000 (a three-bedroom flat in 2022).

Residents in the upmarket West London suburb where former cabinet members reside have spoken of the distressing moments they watched the 21-year-old being given CPR from their balconies after he was fatally shot.

Most locals in the area of West Kensington said they didn’t hear a gunshot but saw emergency services gave the young man CPR for as long as half an hour after the shooting.

Lucima’s next of kin have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers and a post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place today.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who is leading the investigation, said: ‘This horrific incident took place at a busy time of the evening when many people in the area would have been going out, coming home from work or an evening out, or may have been driving through Comeragh Road, Barton Road or Palliser Road. I am keen to hear from these people.

Accomplished jazz musician William Algar, 53, known as Blaise, was killed and chopped up in his home in 2019 – and wasn’t found until a month later.

Days later, drug-dealer Ebrima Cham, 35, nicknamed the ‘Brim Reaper’, was also killed in a frenzied attack at a flat in Hounslow, west London.

Janayo Lucima, then 19, along with Emeka Dawuda-Wodu, then 19, Zimele Dube, then 33, Simon Emmons, then 40 and Marc Harding, then 45 were jailed at the Old Bailey.

Lucima, along with Harding, were sentenced to three years and three months for their role in the dismemberment and disposing of body parts and perverting the course of justice.

Mr Algar’s body was chopped up with a ‘Rambo knife’ in the bathtub at his home.

His arms and legs were buried in a nature reserve and his head and torso were discovered at his home a month later, when he was reported missing by his mother.

At the time, Prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC said the attack on Mr Algar was ‘of extraordinary viciousness beyond anger’.

He told jurors it was ‘frenzied’ and ‘the work of borderline psychopathic proportions’.

Mr Algar was described in court as a ‘good guy’ who had a lot of interests and ‘did not have a harmful bone in his body’.

He suffered from mental health problems and had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

His life spiralled down after he began using and dealing class A drugs and his home was taken over by other dealers in what is known as a ‘cuckoo’ house.

Jurors heard that before his death around December 1 2019, he had fallen out with Dawuda-Wodu over money.

It was alleged that the Dawuda-Wodu, described as a drug-dealing gangster, had bullied Mr Algar and threatened to kill his cat, which was never found.

Following Mr Algar’s death, Dawuda-Wodu held a meeting on December 16 with Emmons and Lucima to decide what to do about the body, the court heard.

Early the next day, Emmons’ phone was allegedly used to research dissolving a body in acid, like a plot from the Breaking Bad television series.

Lucima bought cleaning products at Tesco, and over the next couple of days Mr Algar was dismembered and his limbs were dumped on Hounslow Heath.

The clean-up operation was interrupted by the impromptu decision to attack Mr Cham, who was reputed to rob other dealers of cash and drugs, jurors heard.

Emmons, Dube and Dawuda-Wodu travelled to Mr Cham’s home where he was stabbed 11 times in a ‘ferocious and frenzied attack’, Mr Aylett said.

On January 3 2020, Mr Algar’s head and torso were discovered by police at his home.

The victim’s elderly mother had raised the alarm after he failed to keep in touch with her over Christmas.

Dawuda-Wodu denied the murders and claimed he saw Emmons chopping Mr Algar’s legs off with a Rambo knife.

In his evidence, Emmons dismissed  Dawuda-Wodu’s  claim he confessed to the killings and said the allegation he was involved in the clean-up was ‘fantasy talk’.

Emeka Dawuda-Wodu, 19, was convicted of murdering Mr Cham but cleared of Mr Algar’s murder, following an 11-week trial at the Old Bailey. He admitted perverting the course of justice by disposing of Mr Algar’s body.

Dawuda-Wodu was part of a ‘violent gang’ who broke into a flat in Grove Road and stabbed Mr Cham ‘repeatedly’ before leaving him dead. Simon Emmons, 40, and Zimele Dube, 33, were also convicted of murder.

Mr Algar was a brilliant trumpeter after taking up the instrument at the age of seven. He studied at the London School of Music and was asked to join The Damned after playing in a number of rock bands.

Mr Algar, who was known as ‘Willy’ in the music world, played on the band’s hit single ‘Grimly Fiendish’ in 1985, but was in the line-up for less than a year. As his chances of a successful career faded, he began using drugs and became mired in the shadowy world of heroin and cocaine supply and was know as ‘Blaise.’

He allowed other dealers to use his tiny cluttered flat in Nowell Road, Barnes, as a den for their trade or ‘trap house’ and was treated ‘like a slave’.

Mr Algar, who was described by his family as a ‘gentle man’ had taken in a stray cat called ‘Felix’ and was besotted by the animal, the court heard. When he owed money for drugs Dawuda-Wodu threatened to harm Felix, who later disappeared.

Mr Algar was so worried about the cat that he called the police in the days before he died and told of the threats being made against the pet.

Prosecutor Crispin Aylett told the court that according to key prosecution witness Philip Ross, Mr Algar had spoken ‘disrespectfully’ to Dawuda-Wodu.

He said: ‘He had told Blaise, ‘I’m not your bitch’ or something…If you keep talking to me this way, if this keeps carrying on, I will kill your cat’. Mr Ross is under the impression that the argument had continued and he believes that he said that he had killed the cat.’

Mr Algar was stabbed to death in early December, but he was not reported missing until January 2 when he failed to visit his 93-year-old mother at Christmas.

When police searched the flat they found his head and torso wrapped in bin bags, old clothes, towels and knotted sheets in the blood spattered living room.

His head and arms were later recovered from Hounslow Heath by police dogs after Emmonds and the teenager had taken a cab there with the limbs in a bulging suitcase. Parts of his body, including the genitals and anus have never been recovered.

A pathologist found Mr Algar had no defensive injuries and he may have been killed when he was asleep face down, or ‘incapacitated.’ Traces of drugs including cocaine and morphine were found in his bloodstream.

By the time Dawuda-Wodu was arrested he had been involved in the murder of Mr Cham on December 19, 2019.

Mr Cham, known as ‘Brim’ was also drug dealer who had a fearsome reputation of robbing others in the trade. He was known as ‘a maniac who carried a gun’ and he had stolen Dube’s drugs four times.

The three killers stormed his flat in Grove Road, Hounslow, with a pirate dagger pretending to be buyers and stabbed him with ‘severe force’ in the kitchen of his home. Some of the 11 injuries were inflicted when he was already dead.
