Moment police arrest man carrying a machete outside London Underground station in broad daylight

A man caught carrying a machete has been arrested outside of an underground station in south London, police confirmed.

Video captured from a nearby pub shows the suspect sitting on the ground in handcuffs outside Clapham North Station around 6.45pm today. 

Met Police officers appear to be holding an apparent machete that was confiscated from the suspect.

A witness, who spoke to MailOnline on the condition of anonymity, said bystanders were ‘terrified’ but police responded ‘very quickly’ and handled the situation well.

The suspect was arrested for the Possession of Offensive Weapon, police said. Nobody was injured during the incident.

The witness told MailOnline that the suspect was sitting on the ground with 'his trousers halfway down his pants'. The bystander added that police told a woman at the scene they were arresting the suspect because he 'had a knife'

‘I had been watching the football at the pub and after the game I heard police sirens going off,’ a witness told MailOnline. ‘And then I saw police arresting the bloke.’ 

The bystander recalled how the suspect was sitting on the ground with ‘his trousers halfway down his pants’ as an officer stood over him ‘holding a massive machete’.

A woman at the scene asked officers, ‘why are you arresting him’, according to the witness, who alleged they replied ‘because he has a knife’.

‘Police were good and acted very quick,’ the individual said, adding that ‘the girls near me were terrified’.

The witness, who has allegedly lived in London for nearly three years now, said its not everyday that you see such a large weapon in the streets and suggested he was surprised at how everyone acted like the situation was ‘bloody normal’.
