Hope they remembered their wellies! Revellers ignore the downpours as rain hits Leeds Festival and threatens to dampen celebrations in Reading with Brits suffering another drenching over Bank Holiday weekend (but the sun may be back tomorrow!)

Revellers ignored the downpours today as rain hit Leeds Festival and threatens to also dampen the celebrations in Reading today.

The Met Office predicted heavy showers in the east for this afternoon as well as patchy rain in the west, with some drier and brighter breaks in between.

Temperatures will remain cool with an average of 17 degrees for most of the country, but highs of 20 to 21 degrees in the south – but the sun might be back tomorrow to brighten up the bank holiday.

Revellers at festivals in Leeds and Reading have seen plenty of rain over the weekend and were seen in rain ponchos this morning ready to brace more showers throughout the day.

When the festival grounds in Leeds opened for business this morning, groups of music lovers ran towards the stages to secure the best spots to see their favourite artists.

The downpours came soon after and soaked the festival goers – but it didn’t stop them from dancing in the rain.

The Met Office forecast for the area predicts: ‘Dry but rather cloudy in the west at first, some sunny spells elsewhere.

‘Showers will once again develop in the late morning, heavy and slow-moving, particularly in the east where a rumble of thunder possible. Fewer showers in the west. Maximum temperature 20°C.’

For tonight, the temperatures will stay over a minimum of 11°C and showers will likely be confined to coastal areas before slowly dying away during the evening.

There could be some prolonged clear spells overnight, with a few dog patches potentially developing in prone locations.

Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said in his weather forecast for the Met Office: ‘It is a rather cool and cloudy Sunday to come. If we take a look at the bigger picture we can see high pressure is trying to nudge in from the south west, but it doesn’t quite make it.

‘We’re still in quite a cool northwesterly flow with variable clouds, some showers at times too over the next few days.

‘So looking at the rest of Sunday and it’s a fairly cloudy picture out there. There will be some bright or sunny spells occasionally, but largely grey skies.

‘Through the afternoon though we could see some heavy showers across eastern England. The odd rumble of thunder is possible so do watch out for these.

‘Dried and brighter through the central swathe of the UK and then towards the West it’s quite cloudy with outbreaks of light rain and drizzle too, perhaps just brightening up across Northern Ireland with a few showers later.’

Meanwhile the annual Notting Hill Carnival has kicked off this morning, with revellers taking the streets in sunny London, where 21 degrees are expected today.

But showers are expected to develop over London and Greater London – where Reading festival is underway – in the late morning, which will become fewer in the afternoon, when it is likely to turn ‘rather cloudy’, according to the Met Office.

The forecast for the evening reads: ‘Showers quickly dying away during the evening followed by prolonged clear spells. A band of cloud and patchy rain may venture into western parts [of London] later in the night. Minimum temperature 11°C.’

The second day of the carnival on the bank holiday tomorrow will start with bright and sunny weather which is expected to get ‘increasingly cloudy in the morning, with a few isolated showers breaking out in the afternoon’.

Three flood warnings and one flood alert were issued by the Environment Agency for areas around Liverpool earlier this week and are still in place for today.

Yesterday, a relentless rain-bomb described as ‘insane’ has wreaked flooding havoc across north-west England, disrupting Bank Holiday events including Manchester Pride.

The Met Office had issued a yellow warning for last night saying heavy showers could bring as much as 25-35 mm of rain in just three to six hours.

That followed heavy showers and thunderstorms on Friday night that produced 30-50 mm of rain in places.

A flood alert was put in place by the Environment Agency around St Helens and Warrington.

One social media user who filmed the rain in Liverpool described it as ‘insane’.

Firefighters on Merseyside had to rescue two people after their car submerged and sank in floodwater on North Mossley Hill Road, Liverpool.

The flooding led to the closure of roads around the area and disruption to the Merseyrail line continued into Sunday.

A police spokesman said on Saturday night: ‘We can confirm that emergency services are in Mossley Hill following a report of a concern for safety of two people tonight.

‘At around 9.20pm we received a report of a car submerged in water on North Mossley Hill Road.

Thunder and lightning put a temporary halt on proceedings at Manchester Pride.

Just after 6pm on Saturday, audiences who had turned up to the Alan Turing stage in Sackville Gardens to enjoy the Queer Asian Takeover were told the show would be stopped temporarily due to ‘adverse weather’.

On the stage, performers told the crowd to stay clear of metal barriers in anticipation of a storm passing – with flashes of lightning seen just moments later.

The stage continued to pump out music as crowds dispersed, ironically choosing Madonna’s Ray of Light as one of the first on the playlist.

On the Isle Wight, a huge waterspout – a tornado that occurs over a body of water but doesn’t reach land – was spotted yesterday.
