Tottenham ‘will be in the market’ for late deal at Hotspur Way

Tottenham Hotspur will remain in the market up until the deadline with Antonio Conte potentially needing to replace winger Bryan Gil, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Italian has overseen a busy few months of business in north London but can still strengthen his squad ahead of 11pm on September 1.

What is the latest transfer news from Tottenham?

Spanish winger Gil only made the move to north London from Sevilla in the summer of 2021 in a deal that cost the club £21 million as well as the services of Erik Lamela.

Now Valencia have been linked with a loan deal for the 21-year-old after just returning from a six-month spell with the La Liga side.

However, Conte has hinted that he would want a replacement for the Spaniard lined up before okaying a move away, with Leeds winger Dan James a surprise target.

He said: “The squad is this and if someone goes away then another has to come. This has to be very clear for everybody. Otherwise, we stay with this squad and we continue our path with these players, this squad.”

What has Sheth said on potential deals?

Sheth understands that Tottenham will remain in the market right up until the deadline in case they need to take advantage of any last-minute deals.

But he adds that, if Gil were to leave, it would likely be a player of similar standing who replaces him, rather than a first-team star.

Sheth told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Tottenham will be in the market to try and do a deal. I think Antonio Conte has been public in saying that he would bring in somebody if a member of his first-team squad left. The Bryan Gil one is an interesting one, only because he was on the cusp of that first-team squad. I think he’s been impressed with Bryan Gil and what he did during pre-season and he’s been involved in a couple of the squads so far this season. But he’s basically a fringe player in that squad just now. So, whether he would bring in somebody who would replace Bryan Gil and walk straight into the first team, that’s questionable. It might just be to replace Bryan Gil, maybe with a young player potentially.”

Do Tottenham need more signings?

As Sheth says, it is likely that if Gil is to depart, a player happy to play on the fringes would be brought in as his replacement.

Tottenham secured their major signings early in the window with over £100 million splashed on the likes of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Djed Spence and Ivan Perisic.

While fans will want to see an exciting, big name arrive, they may have to settle for what they’ve got.
