Westminster: Police attend incident at Trafalgar Square

A man has been arrested at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall with police shutting down the London street.

The 29-year-old suspect is in custody following an ‘incident’ this morning, Met Police said.

The road is closed between Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.

Met officers are assisting those from the Ministry of Defence.

It is understood there have been no injuries and there is no risk to the public.

A brief CCTV video clip, via Transport for London, shows police vans blocking off the street.

In a tweet on Westminster MPS, the force said at just after 11.30am: “Officers are assisting the MOD Police at Horse Guards following an incident earlier this morning.

Police have closed the road in Whitehall between in Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square

“A 29-yr-old has man has been arrested & is in custody.

“There are no reports of any injuries & there is no known risk to the public.

“Further updates will be provided in due course.”

The area where the incident is thought to have taken place is just half a mile from the Houses of Parliament and under a mile from Downing Street.

Horse Guards Parade is a large parade ground.

It is the site of the annual ceremonies of Trooping the Colour, which commemorates the monarch’s official birthday, and Beating Retreat.
