One of London’s oldest fish and chip shops that closed after 112 years on sale for £1.5million

An iconic East London fish and chip shop that closed after 112 years has gone on sale for £1.5million. Golden Dragon Fish and Chip Shop has been in operation on Church Street, Stoke Newington, since 1910 and has thrived under seven different owners over its tenure.

However, locals were left ‘in mourning’ when the chippy announced it would be closing its doors last week. The Grade-II listed building is currently under offer on Rightmove, where it was listed for £1,500,000.

The description promises “one to the studio flat and two within the upper maisonette, in addition to a large rear garden accessible via all sections of the property”. Residents on Facebook have paid tribute to the shop and vowed to “grab one last piece of chicken” before it closed for good.

A prospective buyer could choose to make use of the kitchen

Jean Brewer said: “Seems so many of the old shops are closing making way for more overpriced coffee shops.”

Jane Spanton added: “Had our last meal from there tonight, remember going in there with my mum when we were little. It was so sad seeing them both saying goodbye to customers old and new tonight but as they said the business is not viable and they cannot afford to stay open as they have lost so many customers because of the LTN and they were not consulted just like the rest of us.

“The building has been sold already. The end of an era.”

Residents have been coming to the shop for decades

Christine Lemmon commented: “I used to go in there every Friday night on the way home from Girl Guides in St Mary’s Hall, Defoe Road from 1962-67. I heard about JFK’s assassination in there on Friday 22 November 1963!”

The Rightmove for the four-bedroom maisonette description reads: “The property is offered chain free, with full vacant possession on completion. The ground floor shop is offered with fittings in place.”
