West Brom CEO appointment leads to John Terry links for manager

John Terry could be a surprise contender for West Brom manager following Roy Gourlay’s appointment as CEO, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.

The former Chelsea chief executive was at Stamford Bridge for five years during the ex-Blues captain’s time at the club, and was announced as CEO at the Hawthorns earlier today after the sacking of manager Valerien Ismael.

Terry most recently was assistant manager to Dean Smith at Aston Villa and has since taken on a coaching role back in West London.

Reacting to the news of the board appointment on his personal Twitter account, the talkSPORT football correspondent said: “Could this bring John Terry to the table in terms of a potential new #WBA manager?”

The former England captain is known to want to become a manager in his own right, with The Guardian reporting that as his reason for departing Villa Park in the summer.

Left field

The Baggies need someone to get them back on track quickly as a great start to the season has fizzled out and they are currently in danger of falling out of the playoff places after one league win in seven.

Reports have suggested that Steve Bruce (Mirror) is in line to take up the role, and he does at least have experience of reaching the Premier League, whatever criticisms there are of him.

Quite how Terry, 41, will perform as a manager is anyone’s guess currently, as he was last seen getting into hot water over intellectual property use on his NFT venture (Guardian).

That does not suggest a man ready to turn around a flagging ship in the Midlands.

He is surely getting impatient to start his managerial career, as his Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard has just been named to his third job, at Everton.

Fellow England star Steven Gerrard is back in the Premier League having won the Scottish title at Rangers and Wayne Rooney is doing an admirable job at Derby.

But there must be something that is holding teams back from bringing in the one time PFA Player of the Year, in addition to the numerous off-field controversies that have surrounded the 41-year-old for over a decade, including the racism scandal in 2012 (BBC).

In other West Brom news, this Guardiola-endorsed manager has emerged as a candidate for the Baggies job.
