Shoreditch: Man crushed to death as crane drops load days before Christmas

A man has died after being crushed to death after a crane is believed to have dropped its load at a building site in East London.

Paramedics, police and firefighters rushed to an incident on East Road, near Old Street at around 1.30pm this afternoon (Tuesday, December 21).

A man had been struck by a falling object, police said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is believed to have occurred at a building site near the junction with Vestry Street.

Both roads were blocked and a cordon remained in place for a number of hours, causing major delays.

Police, firefighters, and medics were called to an incident in near Old Street at 1:30pm today

In a statement, the London Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters have been called to assist paramedics at an incident on East Road in Hackney.

“The Brigade was called at 1.31pm. Two fire engines from Shoreditch and Islington and a fire rescue unit from Euston Fire Station are at the scene.”

The Met Police has also been approached for comment.
