The beautiful seaside town where properties are extremely cheap and one restaurant serves ‘the best tapas in the UK’

4

If you’re tempted to have a weekend away from London, why not whisk off to a dream destination famous for its beaches, stunning green countryside and rural landscapes – Somerset.

Home to over half a million people, Somerset is one of the largest counties in the UK.

Londoners may associate it with Glastonbury, Wells Cathedral and Cheddar Gorge, but there’s plenty of delightful little towns waiting to be explored.

One of those is the up-and-coming seaside town of Watchet. Though it has a population of just 3,785 people, Watchet is quickly getting snapped up by a number of Brits on the holiday rental site, Airbnb.

The seaside town also has some beautiful coastlines

In fact, SomersetLive revealed last month that it was the sixth-most searched for seaside town on Airbnb.

So, what makes this little seaside town so special? Well, a lot apparently.

It’s about to reveal a £7.3 million makeover

Watchet has been classed as ‘up-and-coming’ because it’s about to welcome an exciting £7.3 million contemporary art gallery which will transform the harbour.

The initiative was led by four local women who love the town and in a week’s time, the gallery and its artists’ studios, workshops, restaurant, education centre and tourist accommodation will officially open to the public.

‘East Quay’ will mirror other art installations in other seaside towns, with the hope that Watchet will be as successful as Margate in Kent with the Turner Contemporary art gallery and Tate in St Ives.

Watchet’s future is looking extremely promising and it wouldn’t be a surprise if it soon becomes the top seaside town on Airbnb.

Properties come cheap

Londoners will be pleased to know that an average property in Watchet costs £222,455 and prices are actually down by 1 per cent on 2019, according to The Times.

There’s plenty of traditional seaside properties for sale on Rightmove right now, and one of those overlooks not just the Marina and Harbour, but as far as the Bristol Channel and the Welsh Coastline.

It’s hard to believe that properties so generously sized are on sale for reasonable prices. So if you are looking to invest, do so now before it’s too late and prices go up.

Unsurprisingly so many Airbnb stays are now booked up for the bank holiday weekend, but book in advance and you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Some of the ‘best tapas in the UK’ is found there

There’s plenty of great places to eat throughout Watchet, but TripAdvisor has dozens of five-star reviews for The Cats Whisker Kitchen, a unique tapas restaurant in the heart of the town.

Described as a ‘hidden gem’ by diners, The Cats Whisker Kitchen serves up a range of authentic Spanish cuisine including chicken and chorizo skewers, potatas bravas and crispy risotto.

All of the tapas dishes are under a decent three for £15 deal and there’s also pan fried mackerel and deep fried whitebait to complement the surroundings.

One diner wrote: “Probably the best Tapas we have had in the UK. Great variety of Tapas, excellent service, good surroundings and lovely food.”

While another said: “That was brilliant, absolutely fantastic, the best tapas I’ve enjoyed in this country.

“The highlight was the braised beef in the rioja sauce, but it was all superb, whether the bruschetta with mushroom and truffle to start, or the prawns, calamari, lamb kofta, arancini, tortilla or potato bravas that we tried, all were excellent and plenty to enjoy.”

Getting there

Catch a train from Paddington to Taunton. Followed by a bus from Taunton Station Bridge to Watchet which takes just under three hours altogether.

Or it’s a five hour drive from London if you don’t mind that.
