Massive new East London village with 785 flats could soon be built next to Olympic Park

Almost 800 new flats could soon be built as part of a huge development plan in the Olympic village.

A proposal to build the flats in an area of the Olympic Park now known as East Wick has been recommended for approval by Newham Council planning bosses.

Sheppard Robson and Studio Egret West have masterplanned the project to build 785 homes beside West Ham United London Stadium.

As well as the flats, the new development would include 632 square metres of retail and cafe space, and 170 square metres of office space.

One third of the homes are planned to be to be affordable. With 102 at social rent, 59 at affordable rent and 54 London affordable rent.

The development is part of a wider plan to build 1,800 homes in the former Olympic village – the first phase of which is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.

Over 10,000 homes have already been built on the site – Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has said it expects over 55,000 people to be living in the area by 2031.

The wider redevelopment of the area includes plans for new branches of University College London, a BBC studio and a new branch of Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

Planning officers at the London Legacy Development Corporation approved the plans and recommended their formal approval by the council.

They said that the flats were: “Designed to achieve a high standard of living accommodation.”

They added: “[The] arrangement of the blocks and choice of materials is considered to result in a well-planned, high-quality development.”

The Local Democracy Reporting Service contacted Studio Egret West for comment.
