Millwall chief hoping history repeats itself – South London News

Gary Rowett is looking forward to the second half of the campaign – traditionally the time when Millwall come on strong.

The Lions’ 2-1 victory at Reading on Saturday was their second in succession and extended their unbeaten run to six Championship games.

Millwall boss Rowett said: “We finished eighth last season and we were disappointed that we missed out on the play-offs.

“Millwall are typically a club that finish the second half of the season a lot stronger than the first half. And I feel we’ll get a lot better as the season goes on, I’ve said that before.”

The Lions had a period of 10 winless games across October and December which coincided with injuries and Covid-19 outbreaks amongst the playing and management staff. The South Londoners have lost just two of the 11 games since that run and have closed the gap on the top six to eight points.

Rowett said: “I don’t think injuries are helping us but if we can get a little bit of a fair wind…Cardiff were close to us five or six games ago and have had a good run. They’re finding themselves in seventh or eighth.

“For us it’s just about climbing the table and keep trying to improve. And certainly improve on games eight to 20 when we felt we weren’t good enough, weren’t competitive enough.”
