With the Olympics fast approaching, local care home residents are limbering up for their very own sporting tournaments.

Five Care UK care homes will be bringing Paris to South London as they open their doors for local people to enjoy their own version of the Games.

The event comes as all five homes join The Big Care UK Sports Day, which sees over 130 Care UK homes across the UK host sports days for the local community and showcase what life in a care home is really like.

Guests can soak up the sporting atmosphere and, for those daring to compete, have the chance to win their own gold medals with an afternoon of fun and games, including egg-and-spoon races, tug of war and sack races.

Amberley Lodge will be hosting dementia-friendly games for the residents and local community alongside a street tea party with refreshments for visitors to enjoy. Addington Heights will also be offering refreshments to visitors on the day.

Smyth Lodge will also extend the invitation to the community by welcoming local nursery children and parents from The Hospital Day Nursery, to participate in the morning games, alongside residents and the team.

Langley Oaks will be hosting families and friends to join the residents where they can enjoy afternoon tea and listen to live entertainment from a singer and guitarist. Colleagues will also join residents in the sporting games followed by a presentation of trophies and medals.

Heavers Court will be hosting an exciting morning full of dementia-friendly sporting competitions and refreshments for residents and their relatives to enjoy – complete with entertainment from singer, Paul Betts.

Azalea Moses, Home Manager at Amberley Lodge, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the local community to join our own sporting celebrations.

“We are part of a strong community here in South London, and days like this are a fantastic way of bringing us all together for a little healthy competition and to celebrate this year’s summer of sport, all while showcasing exactly what life is like at Care UK care homes.

“The events not only promise a lot of laughter and enjoyment for all involved, but also is an excellent way for residents to meet and mingle with lots of new faces – and some familiar ones – while keeping active. We can’t wait until kick-off!”
