North London basement fire causes 0K in damage

A fire in the basement of a home in north London has caused at least $200,000 in damages.

Fire crews were called to the home on Eagletrace Drive east of Wonderland Road North on Thursday morning. Residents of the home were alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm and called for help, the London Fire Department said.

They were able to escape the home unharmed. However, the family’s cat had to be rescued and resuscitated by firefighters.

The blaze was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.

Fire officials said a closed door in the basement helped to prevent the fire from spreading elsewhere in the home. Research has proven that closing the door to a room limits the amount of oxygen a fire can consume, significantly slowing down its growth.

Investigators were expected to remain at the scene for several hours to determine the origin, cause, and circumstance of the fire.
