This Morning ‘delayed’ by ITV as breaking news bulletin forces show off air

This Morning was briefly ‘forced off air’ and its start delayed by a few minutes, as ITV suddenly cut to a breaking news bulletin about a stabbing in London, with it later revealed that a 13-year-old had bee killed.

Just over 10 minutes earlier, presenters Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley briefly appeared on screen towards the end of Lorraine, to speak to their ITV colleague and tease what was coming up on their programme. The hosting duo announced performances by Drops of Jupiter icons Train and a star from hit Channel 4 series The Piano, before Lorraine the continued on with the final part of her own show.

Once Lorraine is finished, there is usually time for a few adverts before opening titles roll on This Morning but, just as the clock ticked down to its start time of 10am, programming was interrupted as the ITV News theme played out on screen and the camera cut to newsreader Nina Hossain.

The anchor quickly revealed that the reason for the unexpected broadcast was reports of a stabbing in east London. She told viewers at home: “In the last few minutes, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed that they have arrested a man with a sword,” adding: “It happened in Hainault area shortly before 7am this morning.

“Police were called to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house. They say they understand the suspect went onto attack members of the public and two police officers. Their condition is unknown at this time.”

Nina ended the bulletin by confirming that a 36 year old had been arrested and police did not believe ‘there was any ongoing threat to the wider community’ or that the incident was terror related.

As soon as Nina has finished speaking, This Morning credits rolled and, standing in the studio, Ben and Cat made no immediate mention of what happened, before then talking about the shocking events in a discussion about the day’s biggest news stories a few moments later.
