Discover a superb and culturally instructive exhibition which explores how Jews settled in London and developed a new style that would revolutionise the world
of fashion.
Fashion is part of history, and the Jews didn’t just change the way London dressed, they were part of London’s history.
Fashion City at the London’s Docklands Museum in Hertsmere Road, Canary Wharf, is organised as a walk through the streets and shops where they lived and sold their wares, a tunnel in the central metro line linking east and west.
It is as beautiful as it is informative, filled with a carefully maintained collection of pieces.
The whole story is retraced with key elements, including photographs and newspapers which tell the story of Jewish fashion designers who became leaders in their field, founded retail chains that still exist today and dressed the rich and famous, including David Bowie, Princess Diana and Mick Jagger.
These are poignant stories of daily survival in the face of oppression and marginalisation, where some lose and others thrive, but all are worth telling to remember what came before.
The exhibition runs until July 7, at London’s Docklands Museum in Hertsmere Road, Canary Wharf, with tickets for adults priced at £13.
