A tenant in an east London apartment unit without working smoke alarms was rescued from a balcony by London firefighters during a blaze early Monday, the London fire department said.

There weren’t any working smoke alarms in the unit in the building on Mornington Avenue where the fire started, the fire department said. The tenant was rescued from their balcony, treated at the scene and then taken to hospital. No information about the extent of the person’s injuries was released.

“It is so important to have working smoke alarms. They are lifesavers,” platoon chief Kirk Loveland said in a social media post.

Damage is estimated at $25,000, the fire department said.

Person hit by train in west London

A person suffered serious injuries when they were hit by a train in west London, London police say.

Emergency crews responded Monday afternoon to the CP Rail tracks that cross over Platt’s Lane following reports an individual had been struck, police said.

The person was taken to hospital. The incident was related to any other roads or crosswalks, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

A spokesperson for Canadian Pacific Kansas City said the train hit the individual at about 3:30 p.m. near 82 Essex St., a home on the street just east of Platt’s Lane.

The train cleared the area later in the afternoon, the spokesperson said.

Woodstock police seize loaded handgun, charge man

A Mississauga man faces a slew of weapons charges after Woodstock police seized a loaded handgun.

Police received information last Friday a suspect had a firearm, Woodstock police said Monday. Officers searched the suspect’s vehicle and found a loaded handgun.

A 41-year-old Mississauga man is charged with six counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon with ammunition and failing to comply with a release order.

St. Thomas resident charged with assaulting police officer

A St. Thomas resident faces charges, including assaulting a police officer, after a man sought by police was arrested Sunday.

St. Thomas police said they learned of the location of a suspect sought on charges including theft and mischief and failing to comply with both a release order and terms of probation. The suspect tried to strike and push an officer while being arrested, St. Thomas police said.

A 28-year-old St. Thomas resident is charged with assaulting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and failing to comply with probation, police said.

Woman charged after home’s window broken with hammer

A woman has been charged after Chatham-Kent police were called about a window being smashed with a hammer.

Officers responded to a home on George Street in Ridgetown at 4:30 p.m. Sunday for a mischief investigation, police said.

Officers learned a woman had broken the window with a hammer, police said. The woman has a history of harassing an individual who lived there and their family, police said.

A 40-year-old Ridgetown woman was arrested and charged with criminal harassment and mischief.
