One man is dead after a fatal motorcycle crash on a quiet residential street in west London, a late-night incident neighbours say happened in an area notorious for speeding.

London police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the crash on Aldersbrook Road, between Hawthorne Road and Ranchwood Crescent, at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday to reports of a motorcycle colliding with a tree. Aldersbrook runs north-south, parallel to Hyde Park and Wonderland roads.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene. A 24-year-old woman, a passenger on the motorcycle, was rushed to London Health Sciences Centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Initial calls to emergency crews early Saturday said neither the man or woman were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

London police have not released the identity of the deceased.

A single artificial pink flower was placed at the base of the tree where the crash took place as of Sunday morning. Small bits of vehicle debris littered the grass surrounding the crash site.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, was out late that evening and returned home to see his street cordoned off by police. He was escorted to his house, near where the crash took place.

He said it appeared the woman had been thrown quite a distance from the crash site.

London police did not provide any additional details Sunday, citing the “active and ongoing” investigation. An updated condition of the woman injured in the crash was not provided by police.

The violent crash has been “traumatizing” for neighbours, one resident said.

Aldersbrook Road is a long, relatively straight residential street in the city’s White Hills neighbourhood with a posted speed limit of 40 km/h. Aggressive driving, speeding and street racing in the area is a common occurrence, the woman said.
