A series of explosions were heard and smoke seen pouring out from a building beside the Old Bailey court in London this morning.

Firefighters tackled an incident involving an electrical substation to the rear of the historic site, located near St Paul’s Cathedral, at 10.45am.

Defendants who were on trial in the building were led back to prison vans after courtrooms were plunged into darkness by a power cut.

Among the trials impacted was the case of Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, who are charged with the manslaughter of their baby Victoria.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said the substation had been damaged in the incident, but no injuries were reported.

A statement from LFB said: ‘Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters responded to an incident involving an electrical substation on Warwick Lane, near the rear of the Old Bailey.
