Laurence Fox has been fined £220 after breaking one of London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s new 20mph speed limits on Boxing Day.

The Reclaim Party Leader and actor, 45, was flashed by a speed camera while driving at 24mph in his Volvo on Vauxhall Bridge Road, Westminster.

A 20mph limit was imposed in the area last year as part of Mr Khan’s ‘Vision Zero’ campaign. He is aiming to eliminate road deaths by 2041 – and more 20mph zones will crop up this year.

His policy has come under fire with many motoring groups arguing that it creates congestion.

Fox, who lost his deposit when he ran against Mr Khan in the 2021 mayoral race, was convicted behind closed doors for the speeding offence on Boxing Day 2022, the Evening Standard reports.

It comes after the Lewis actor also lost his deposit in the Uxbridge by-election but insisted he was pleased with the result after beating the Liberal Democrats.

Last week, he received 714 votes in the crunch poll that saw the Tories cling on thanks to Mr Khan’s controversial ULEZ expansion.

Tory Steve Tuckwell held on with a majority of just 495, down from the 7,210 Boris Johnson secured in 2019.

But despite receiving 2.31 per cent of the vote, Fox insisted it had been a good night for him and his party, although he had hoped to beat the Greens too but fell short by 179 votes.

In May, Fox sarcastically tweeted that he would be campaigning for 5mph speed limits on motorways and 1mph in cities. His comments came after Labour MP Rachael Maskell suggested the introduction of 10mph speed limits.

Court documents show that Fox was caught speeding just after 3pm on December 26 last year. He was alerted of the prosecution in May and submitted a form to confirm he was behind the wheel.

Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court said Fox did not enter a plea. He was convicted through the Single Justice Procedure this month and was forced to pay a £220 fine with a victim surcharge and costs.

Fox, who last week posted an image of a LGBTQ+ flag stuck to the pavement outside his home, will also have three penalty points added to his license.

The actor-turned-political activist shared the image on his social media last week, claiming it had been ‘varnished/superglued’ outside his front door.

The 45-year-old, who has been outspoken on gender issues in recent months, appeared to suggest it was a ‘threat’ against him and he wasn’t ‘intimidated’.

It came a month after Fox was cleared by the Metropolitan Police of a hate crime after he filmed himself burning copies of the same type of flag on Father’s Day.

In the furore that followed he was reported to the police by trans rights activists, but after an investigation the force determined no criminal offence had been committed.
