A serving police officer has been dismissed without notice after he was convicted of possessing crystal meth.
Dino Atkins Tyler, a detective constable attached to the South East Basic Command Unit, had a federation representative attend on his behalf at the hearing today.
After considering all the evidence, it was concluded that Atkins Tyler had breached the standards of professional behaviour in relation of discreditable conduct.
Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, responsible for policing in the South East Area, said: “As police officers we are all well aware of the devastating consequences drugs can have on individuals and communities.
“The fact that Atkins Tyler was in possession of this kind of drug is incredibly shocking. It is quite clear that he should have known better and as an organisation we have no tolerance for this kind of behaviour.”
On February 6, Atkins Tyler attended Medway Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to possession of Class A drug, namely crystal meth. He was subsequently sentenced to a conditional discharge for three months and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £116.
He will now be added to the Barred List held by the College of Policing. Those appearing on the list cannot be employed by police, local policing bodies (PCCs), the Independent Office for Police Conduct or His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
Atkins Tyler was not attached to a specific location, but his command unit covers Lewisham, Bexley and Greenwich.
An accelerated misconduct hearing is essentially a speeded up misconduct process. This can take place when there is sufficient evidence (in this case a criminal conviction) to establish that gross misconduct has taken place.
