New News Editor in London

Cassandra Vinograd has joined the International desk as a news editor in London. As she has shown in nearly two years working as a freelancer with Live, she is a multitalented player. She edits. She writes. She is deft at news, in all its many forms.

“She has all the skills you’d want in an editor, including an almost uncanny ability to spot news,” said Shashank Bengali, senior editor for Live in London. “She was essential to our live Ukraine briefing and has played a key role in our coverage of the Gaza war, the Morocco earthquake, elections in Turkey and so many more important stories.”

Cassandra comes to The Times with a wealth of experience working overseas, reporting throughout Africa, Europe and the Middle East for almost 20 years. She started with The Associated Press in West Africa, and later worked as an editor with The Wall Street Journal in Brussels and then in London. That’s where she led the daytime digital news desk and covered a few coups in her spare time before transitioning back to The A.P. and specializing in defense, foreign affairs and politics.

Before joining The Times, she worked for “60 Minutes” on CBS; spent three years freelancing for print and TV outlets with a focus on conflict and human rights; and served as deputy London editorial manager and a senior writer for NBC News Digital, with a particular emphasis on terrorism and foreign policy. She was part of the NBC team that won a Peabody Award for ISIS coverage; her team’s coverage of the 2016 Brussels attacks received an Emmy nomination, as did its work on the Charlie Hebdo attacks.

As we continue to evolve and adapt our breaking news coverage in London, Cassandra will work closely with the International and Live teams, assigning, editing and writing.

Please join us in congratulating Cassandra.
