London could be hit by two-and-a-half-days of heavy rain during the later part of this week, the Met Office has warned.

The rainfall will fall on the capital in the early hours of Wednesday and is expected to continue into Thursday and Friday.

The rain showers are expected to be heaviest on Thursday morning, according to the BBC’s weather service, and could last into next week.

A Met Office spokesperson said: ‘It will be mild, cloudy and windy Tuesday, culminating in a period of rain into early Wednesday.

‘It will become fine but colder midweek with eventual sunny spells, ahead of a wetter and windier Thursday.’

Across other parts of the UK, the Met Office had this to say: ‘Wet and windy weather moves southeast on Tuesday, but Wednesday becomes colder from the north, with rain on Thursday perhaps turning wintry in the north.

‘Accumulations will be over high ground but also with a threat at lower levels. Through the weekend a change towards a north or north-westerly wind brings cold conditions spreading across the UK, with wintry showers across coasts.’

The Environment Agency warned: ‘Local river and surface water flooding is possible on Tuesday and Wednesday for parts of the west midlands and north of England.

‘Land, roads and some properties may flood and there may be travel disruption.’

The warning comes as the UK is set to face a rollercoaster of weather conditions this week, ranging from 16°C spring heat to autumnal floods, then winter whiteouts.

A yellow weather warning for rain is also in place today for the west coast of Scotland.

The Met Office warned: ‘Some southern parts of the warning area may see a drier interlude for a time on Monday and there is some uncertainty as to how far north the rain gets.

’40-75 mm of rain may fall quite widely in the warning area, but there is potential for 120-170 mm in the wettest areas, this perhaps most likely in parts of Argyll, Lochaber and Wester Ross.’

Meanwhile the Met Office long range forecast suggests there could be wintry conditions across the UK between February 19 and March 4.

‘Although there is still some uncertainty, conditions most likely to be drier and more settled overall for much of the UK with lighter winds mainly from the north or northwest but potential for some stronger winds at times later on,’ the weather service said.

‘This would increase the likelihood of colder conditions developing more widely for a time with potential for fog and notable frosts alongside wintry showers across the north/northwest or more widely as any isolated fronts move through later in the period.’
