Son Heung-min returns to North London, South Korea fall to Jordan in AFC Asian Cup

Following their 2-0 loss to Jordan today, South Korea have been knocked out of the AFC Asian Cup, meaning that Tottenham’s captain will be resuming his action with the club in the coming days.

Sonny was able to net three goals in six matches across the month-long tournament, including a match-winning free kick in the 104th minute of play in the quarter-final clash with Australia.

Since the Spurs veteran left after Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth in December, the team were knocked out of the FA Cup and have gathered a win and two draws in league play. The performances have been decent, and Richarlison is on fire with nine goals across his previous eight Premier League appearances. Timo Werner has also provided help in Son’s absence with two assists in three matches. Nevertheless, Ange’s winger-striker hybrid will be a definite boost.

While Werner has gotten on better than most expected since joining on loan last month, he’s still inconsistent at times, losing possession or shanking shots wide of the posts. Son’s ruthlessness in the final third, with 17 goal contributions across 20 matches, combined with Richarlison’s recent performances, could provide Spurs with an even more lethal attack than was seen earlier this season.

Now, nearly all of the previously injured, suspended, or traveling players will be around for Postecoglou to work with. Spurs take on Brighton this Saturday and, assuming Son is fit, we could finally see a starting XI similar to the one which was so dominant at the start of the 24/24 campaign.
