Bromley has been rated one of the best places to retire in England.

Retiring is important because it gives people a break from working after many years of struggle, financial complications, and outright exhaustion.

It’s a time to relax, enjoy life, and do things you couldn’t do when you were working full-time, and Bromley has been dubbed one of best places to do so in England.

Bromley has consistently attracted families seeking more affordable housing options compared to those closer to central London, thanks to its well-regarded grammar schools and a convenient 20-minute commute to London Victoria.

Beyond its appeal to families, Bromley offers similar strengths that resonate with retirees.

There are two town centre parks – Bromley Palace Park and Church House Gardens – and three accessible country parks – all popular choices for leisurely dog walks and catch ups with friends.

The bustling town centre is equipped with a variety of shops and restaurants, located in The Glades – a shopping centre which is stacked with popular shops and great bargains.

And of course, the heart of the community, the Churchill Theatre – a popular spot for theatregoers.

Despite concerns about its future, is set to premiere a new stage musical adaptation of Clueless in February 2024.

Frances McDonald from Savills Research, who exclusively analysed data for Telegraph Money, said: “Owner occupiers aged 65-plus possess an estimated £2.6 trillion in net housing wealth, with many having fully paid off their mortgage debt.”

The research looked at crucial factors influencing the choice of retirement location, encompassing practical considerations such as the availability of hospitals, GPs, dentists, shops, and green spaces.

Crime levels (excluding fraud incidents) were also considered, with figures cross-referenced against average property prices to rank locations accordingly.

Other locations which have been rated as one of the top 10 places to retire are:

  • Exeter, Devon Merton, south-west London

  • Richmond-upon-Thames, south-west London

  • Epsom & Ewell, Surrey Worcester, Worcestershire

  • Sutton, south-west London

  • Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

  • Kingston-upon-Thames, south-west London

  • Westminster, central London

McDonald added: “In some instances, these individuals are likely to reassess their home location to ensure convenient access to local amenities and health services, aiming to reduce reliance on others in later life.

“Towns and cities like Exeter, Worcester, and Cheltenham all emerge as high-ranking options based on these criteria.”
