Junior doctors’ strike in January could disrupt appointments

Junior doctors at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust are due to strike from 7am on Wednesday, January 3 until 7am on Tuesday, January 9.

The strike will impact Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield and the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead.

Emergency care and acute services will be prioritised, but patients are advised to use other non-hospital services during the industrial action, such as GP practices, pharmacies, or the NHS 111 hotline.

The trust said that patients due for outpatient appointments or procedures will be directly contacted if they need rescheduling; if they do not hear anything, they are to attend as per their schedule.

Junior doctors form half the NHS’s doctors and their strike, in the face of an ongoing pay dispute with the Government, is expected to cause widespread disruption.

This walkout follows a 72 hour strike that ended on December 23, which along with the upcoming strike, leaves only two weekdays unaffected by holidays or industrial action within the NHS in three weeks.

Senior medical staff at the NHS have emphasised that emergency care will remain the priority during the strike.
