ONS data reveals how happy east London boroughs are

The Annual Population Survey published earlier this month showed estimates of personal well-being on four major grounds – happiness, life satisfaction, anxiety and the feeling that things done in life are worthwhile.

Newham has the highest level of happiness in London in the year ending March 2023 – scoring 8 out of 10.

Redbridge ranked fourth, Havering ranked sixth, Barking and Dagenham ranked ninth, while Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest were the bottom two for happiness in this period.

However, the data for Havering suggests that the borough is the happiest in 2022-3 it has been in the last ten years, with the happiness score standing at 7.54 out of 10 compared to 7.25 in 2011-12.

On the satisfaction front, while Newham and Redbridge retain their spots in 2022-23, Havering slipped to 13th spot below Barking and Dagenham in 11th.

In the worthwhile criteria, Havering rose to third position in London. Tower Hamlets was again in the bottom three.

Anxiety levels, in the last five years since 2018-19, were lowest in Newham according to the data.
