London police are under investigation by the province’s police watchdog after a man suffered injuries while trying to escape from custody.

London police say it was shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when a person who’d been arrested was transported to hospital with what they describe as “an alleged pre-existing condition.”

While at the hospital, the person tried to escape police, and was seriously injured during an interaction with officers, police said. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now investigating. An arm’s-length agency, the SIU probes all cases of serious injury, death or sexual assault involving police officers in Ontario.

Break-in arrests

Brant OPP say a call about a suspicious person led to an arrest following two break-ins.

Police located and identified an individual who was the subject of the call last Saturday evening. There were no grounds to arrest them because there was no crime reported at the time, police say.

Several hours later, at about 11:25 p.m., police received a report of a break-in at a home on Highway 53 in Cathcart, a tiny, rural community west of Brantford. A short time later another break-in was reported at another nearby home.

The investigation led to the suspicious person who was in the same area hours earlier.

Officers located and arrested the suspect in Brantford. The accused, a 28-year-old Brantford resident, has been charged with two counts of breaking and entering and four counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Property stolen from the two homes was returned to the owners, police say.
