Millwall FC fans have raised nearly £25,000 for the Royal British Legion, with a number of different fundraising efforts.
The Lions’ Remembrance Day fixture against Southampton at the Den, in Bermondsey, on November 4, saw Millwall fans raise £24,662.53 for the national charity that supports serving and ex-serving men and women.
The money was raised through the sale of poppies and bespoke poppy badges at the match as well as donations by fans on the day.
At a pre-match ceremony the teams were led onto the pitch, flanked by three servicemen carrying wreaths.
After the teams broke away for kick-off, service personnel lay the wreaths behind the goals.
Each year, the club auctions off match-worn shirts featuring a poppy to raise extra funds for the Royal British Legion.
This year, 21 shirts were available, including a limited edition poppy frame showcasing a Millwall poppy shirt.
The bidding closed on Sunday, with the auction raising a total of £9,500.80, topping last year’s result of £7,743.
This is the third consecutive year Lions fans have raised more than £20,000 for the Royal British Legion.
Donations allow the charity to supply expert advice and guidance as well as recovery and rehabilitation initiatives to help people who served in the army to transition back to civilian life.
A spokesman from Millwall FC said: “The club would like to thank all Lions and Southampton supporters for their immense generosity, a special thank you also goes to Mel Bingham, who expertly oversees the fundraising each year.”
