Mark Kinzley, 61, died in hospital after being rushed there from Cambridge Nursing Home, Cambridge Park, senior east London coroner Graeme Irvine said.
The date of the incident was not given in court, but the case was referred to the East London Coroner’s Court on November 1 by Barts Health NHS Trust.
Mr Kinzley had died at the trust’s Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone.
Mr Irvine waived a post-mortem examination, in order that Mr Kinzley’s wish to donate his organs could be respected.
The court heard that Mr Kinzley was found hanging at the care home and the coroner said he felt it “necessary” to order a full inquest into how he came to be in that position.
“It can be described as a violent death,” he said.
Mr Irvine told the Waltham Forest court that medical evidence showed Mr Kinzley had died from hypoxic ischemic brain damage – caused by a lack of oxygen and blood to the brain.
He said this had been caused by asphyxia.
At a short hearing on Thursday, November 9, Mr Irvine asked his coroner’s officer to investigate how Mr Kinzley came to be a resident of the nursing home.
He ordered the nursing home to hand over Mr Kinzley’s care notes, care plans and risk assessments.
He said he also wanted to see evidence that Mr Kinzley’s death had been reported to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the local safeguarding team “as an incident worthy of investigation”.
A spokesperson for the Cambridge Nursing Home said: “We are currently assisting the police, CQC and social services with their investigations into the death of our resident.
“Our thoughts at this difficult time are with his family and our team who cared for him.”
The inquest was adjourned to March 26, 2024.
