Lucky for Londoners, there are plenty of great country pubs that are nestled in beautiful countryside that are within easy reach of the capital.
Adding to this offering is The White Horse, a newly opened pub restaurant in the picturesque village of Graffham, West Sussex that is under a two hour drive from south London and a good excuse for a day trip, or weekend away.
Found in the heart of the South Downs National Park not far from Cowdray, Goodwood and Petworth, The White Horse was formerly a small pub that has been refurbished into an elegant restaurant that retains welcoming feel of a country inn.
It comes with 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside, a bar, and a dining room for 38 people.
For the warmer months, there is an extensive garden and outdoor kitchen, and there are six bedrooms on the premise as well.
The kitchen is led by Grant Jones who trained at Le Gavroche in Mayfair before working as a private chef for high profile clients.
Grant has created an a la carte and tasting menu that utilises produce from the area that has been prepared with classic French techniques.
Expect dishes such as Sussex pork terrines with caramelised apple puree and hazelnut salad, wild sea bass with Jerusalem artichoke and lobster beignet; and a rack of South Downs lamb with braised shepherd’s pie and squash puree.
The South Downs has plenty of walks to do, whether you want to tackle part of the South Downs Way or not.

You can also spot sculptures and artworks made by community groups and artists from the area on the Heathland Sculpture Trail. The art trail links up various heaths including Graffham Common, Black Down and Woolbeding.
