Evaidas Simanaitis, 68, was found “unresponsive” at his home in Matcham Road, Leytonstone in mid-October.
His death was originally referred to a coroner’s court in north London because he died in a north London hospital.
But, said coroner Graeme Irvine: “The coroner dealing with it referred the case to me on the basis that it seemed the circumstances of Mr Simanaitis’s death were more fixed within the east London jurisdiction.”
A post-mortem examination, carried out in Poplar, gave the cause of death as a head injury.
“There was bruising to the left side of his jaw, consistent with a strike from a clenched fist,” said Mr Irvine, during a hearing at East London Coroner’s Court, Walthamstow, on Thursday, November 9.
Further tests are required on his brain, Mr Irvine added, to fully understand his injuries – but those are unlikely to be completed for three months.
Mr Irvine ordered that an update be provided by the investigating officer “for coroner’s eyes only”.
He adjourned the inquest to April 24.
*Moteajunrs Ignas, 25, of no fixed address, was charged on Tuesday, October 17, with robbery and causing grievous bodily harm.
He appeared in custody at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 18 October.
He is due to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Wednesday, November 15.
