Guest of Honour: Steve Perryman – News

Our Guest of Honour on Saturday is former U’s defender Steve Perryman.

Steve joined the U’s from Tottenham Hotspur in March 1986 having made a club record 854 appearances for Spurs. He had been at White Hart Lane for 19 years, twice winning the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Cup.

“I knew Oxford had some good players and I had a great admiration for Maurice Evans. I’d become so indoctrinated in the way they did things at Spurs that I wanted to see how it was done elsewhere. For example, Spurs trained at Cheshunt and the training ground was the heartbeat of the club and like a second home to the players. My only bugbear is that I lived in West London and my journey around the North Circular would take me longer than it took to get to Oxford!

“At Oxford, we’d go to the stadium and get in a minibus, which David Fogg would drive. ‘Where are we going, Foggy?’ someone would ask, and he’d say, ‘I don’t know yet, I’m waiting for a call’.

“I loved Maurice Evans and got on well with all the players. Although they were near the bottom of the league you could see they weren’t a bad team, with players like Aldridge, Hamilton, Hebberd, and Houghton, as shown by beating QPR in the League Cup final. I’m pleased that I did my part in helping them stay in Division One.”

Steve will be meeting guests in Icons Restaurant and we are sure you will make him feel at home when he is introduced to the crowd at half time.
