A man and woman have been charged with ‘concealing the birth of a child’ after a newborn girl was found dead at a property in east London.

Ahmed Mahad, 35, of no fixed address and Dawn-Marie Huxtable, 36, of Mimosa Close, Harold Hill, were charged after a baby’s body was found at a residential address in Harold Hill, Havering, on Tuesday.

Met Police were called to the scene following reports over concerns of the baby’s welfare and later discovered the infant’s body.

The Met Police revealed that Mahad and Huxtable have both been charged under Section 60 of the Offences Against the Person Act, Concealing the Birth of a Child.

The pair will appear before Barking Magistrates’ Court this Friday.

Detectives on the Met’s East Area BCU Public Protection team launched an investigation after the infant’s body was discovered.

They later arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of murder.

The baby’s death is being treated as unexplained, with a post-mortem examination being prioritised to find out what happened.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford, from the Met’s Public Protection team covering Havering, said earlier this week: ‘This is a tragic incident and we understand it will be hugely upsetting for local people.

‘Our officers are still at the scene and we thank residents for their patience while we carry out our critical enquiries.

‘At this time, the baby’s death is being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will take place at the earliest opportunity to help us determine what may have happened and to confirm how long the baby’s body had been there.

‘A man and a woman arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident remain in custody.’

Havering is a suburban borough in outer London, which borders the town of Brentwood in Essex.
