Dagenham & Redbridge midfielder Jake Hessenthaler says they need to put in a performance in their Essex derby against Southend United this weekend.
The Shrimpers visit Victoria Road on Saturday having won their opening National League fixture 4-0 against Oldham Athletic at Roots Hall last weekend.
Daggers needed a last-gasp Harry Phipps header to earn a 1-1 draw at Altrincham, but Hessenthaler says they are buzzing for their home opener.
“Playing in games against your closest rivals is always exciting, it always brings a real buzz around the ground when you turn up,” he told the club website.
“We know what these games mean to everyone so we know we will have to put in a performance in to match that.
“They are going through a rough time at the minute, going into games with nothing to lose. Having that mentality can be very dangerous.
“But we’ve got to be ready and play our game and I’m sure if we do that we can get a positive result.”
Hessenthaler says Ben Strevens’ squad have been working hard all week in readiness for their derby battle.
And he is hoping they can give the home fans plenty to cheer – with some help from the stands – having been grateful for the 100-plus supporters who travelled to Greater Manchester.
“It’s been a good week, after a positive away result against Altrincham it felt nice to get back to the training ground on Monday with positivity and work towards hopefully another good weekend this week,” he added.
“Personally, to gain a point any time you go away from home is a positive result. We did it the hard way especially after coming back so late
“But to me it also shows the character within our group to keep going until the end which is a great trait to have throughout a season.
“It was amazing to see so many of them make the trip, glad we was able to give them something to go home with, but yes they will be massive for us this weekend, I’m sure the atmosphere will be amazing, can’t wait now.”
