London’s plant-powered pub pop-up goes permanent

After a wildly successful three-month pop-up with En Root, South London’s The Railway Tavern is now making this partnership permanent, promising to delight and nourish the local communities with healthy, hearty, and home-cooked Indian meals.

Harsh Modasia, Co-Founder at En Root, said of the partnership: “We have been ‘En Root’ to the Railway Tavern for a while as it’s our go-to “local” with an epic beer garden, great music and a proper community feel.

“It’s always a great ambience amongst staff, customers and a fantastic, family, feel-good energy that matches the En Root ethos.”

Following in the footsteps of its popular Clapham, Brixton, and Peckham siblings, ‘En Root at The Railway Tavern’ will serve a tantalising array of plant-based dishes, including reinvented pub favourites and a selection of delectable small bites.

The plant-powered pub’s range of innovative fusion dishes include Tandoori Wings made from chunky oyster mushrooms, Loaded Fries with a spicy tomato sauce, and Poppa Nachos where India meets Mexico with dhal, pickled cabbage, avocado, raita, and spice krispies.

For those seeking more substantial comfort food, the Crispy Oyster Mushroom Burger served with ‘Rajannaise’ and Mango Chutney, alongside Loaded Fries, will surely hit the spot. And on Sundays, visitors can savour a delightful Plant-Based Wellington.

To complement the delicious vegan fare, The Railway Tavern’s renowned drink selection is now entirely plant-based, with locally sourced vegan beer and fresh coconuts for those seeking a refreshing tipple.

The menu also boasts mouth-watering sweet treats like the ‘Mango Lassi Cheesecake’ and the ‘Beetroot Blueberry Cacao Brownie,’ rounding off the ultimate pub experience.

The En Root Philosophy

En Root’s philosophy centres on feeding the community with fresh vegetables, wholesome pulses, and fragrant Gujarati spices, and their unprocessed and handmade approach reflects their commitment to sustainability.

The Railway Tavern, known for its friendly atmosphere, live music scene, and ethical practices such as reducing beer miles and becoming a London Living Wage Employer, is taking the next step on its sustainable journey with the addition of En Root’s plant-based menu.

Pamela Dwyer, General Manager at The Railway Tavern said: “At The Railway, we have been on a journey towards operating a more ethical and sustainable business for some time now.

“En Root has been a match made in heaven for us from the beginning! With the same community ethos and collaborative mentality, they have allayed many of the obvious questions in the journey of food from field to plate – which, in our industry, has always been a source of contention.

“We, of course, are not expecting our customers to become vegan, only encourage them to try a delicious plant based meal from En Root when visiting The Railway: South London’s first fully Plant Powered Pub.”

The pub is now set to become a destination for vegans, vegetarians, and anyone seeking delicious and healthy food options in Tulse Hill.
