Cycle C42 links Ilford to Barking and Barking Riverside

A new six mile cycle pathway has opened linking Barking town centre to the Riverside development on the Thames in one direction and to Ilford town centre in the other.

The Cycleway 42 route has been tested by kids on bikes for their seal of approval.

It extends a wider east London network of ‘safe cycle’ pathways connecting Barking with Ilford and Cycleway 43 to West Ham, Bow and all the way to central London.

The extension was part of Barking and Dagenham Council’s highways programme which includes a cycle hub to get bicycles repaired and maintained.

“Our programme is in full swing,” Cllr Cameron Geddes said. “We’re making active travel more accessible with options to get people to swap cars for bikes.”

The programme includes makeovers at busy traffic junctions like Wedderburn Road that crosses St Awdry’s Road and Eldred Road, off the main A123 Ripple Road through Barking, that cyclists used to avoid before. Cycle 42 guides you through quieter areas through green spaces where possible to make cycling safer.
