Seventy Muslim scouts walk 12 miles in East London to raise money for survivors of the Türkiye/Syria earthquake

One of the first Muslim Scouts groups in London, 7th Goodmayes, walked from masjid to masjid (mosque to mosque) in Redbridge, East London on Saturday 27 May 2023, to support Islamic Relief’s Türkiye/Syria earthquake appeal.

The Scout group raised a record amount of 32k, for what was their first sponsored walk since 2019 due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Seventy Scouts from the ages of four to 18 participated, walking 12 miles from Gardens of Peace Cemetery to Newbury Park Mosque, Gants Hill Masjid, Redbridge Masjid, Masjid-e-uwais-e-Qarni, Masjid al-Falah, Ilford Muslim Society, Seven Kings Masjid, Masjid Ansar, Masjid Adam, Ilford Islamic Centre Masjid, Loxford Muslim Society, Eton Road Community Centre and finally Al Madina Masjid.

The money raised went towards Islamic Relief UK’s emergency appeal to help those affected by the Türkiye/Syria earthquake in which approximately 30 million people were affected in Türkiye and 10.9 million in Syria. Islamic Relief is on the ground providing food, hygiene kits, medicine, shelter, and other much-needed assistance.

Shabana Shaukat, Group Scout Leader said: “All the scouts who took part in the walk are literally taking positive steps within our community to help raise thousands of pounds for people in need. I am truly humbled and inspired by the impact of the collective fundraising efforts of the group.”

Faysal Maruf one of the founding leaders of 7th Goodmayes Scout Group said: “It’s inspiring to be part of such a dedicated group of scout leaders who are volunteering week in and week out for our young people.”
