With spring attempting to make an appearance, it’s a good time to explore the outdoors – and for little ones, it can often be full of new experiences.
Dig, an interactive play by Pied Piper Theatre Company aimed at babies and toddlers, aims to introduce youngsters to the garden in a fun, age-appropriate way.
On arrival at the Broadway theatre in Barking, my two-year-old and I were invited to pick up a box of equipment – namely a shaker, a butterfly puppet and something long, stretchy and intended to represent a worm – to use during the show.
The children (and most adults) sat on the floor during the half hour performance, with puppets such as birds and butterflies flying over our heads at points.
As well as an introduction to a variety of garden creatures – leading to a rendition of Incy Wincy Spider at one point – the play also explored the seasons, counting and how to grow vegetables. We were invited to feel the herbs, join in with songs and interact with the play.
Actor and puppeteer Nick was great at engaging the children, conducting much of the show through actions, songs and simple words.
It drew laughs at points from my toddler, who was fully focused throughout and at the end declared “more”. More, indeed.
