By Benjamin Flowers: The south side Belize City area known as Gungulung is receiving some much-needed infrastructure upgrades resulting from a collaboration between the Belize City Council and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH).

Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner explained this week that the project is already underway and will see major quality-of-life changes in the area including concrete streets and installing access roads and installing infrastructure to add green spaces.

“This is a huge project. The city could have never taken on this project by itself, it’s over $3 million,” Wagner said. “The London Bridges, we have done away with London Bridges and we have also been able to dredge the canal back to where it was, 6-7 feet, we reach the sandbed, we remove all the mud, all the material.”

Wagner also said that the works done on the canal will be followed up by lining the full 2,100 feet of canal on both sides with gabion stones.

He went on to say that the people in the area have suffered for years due to poor infrastructure and that the Belize City Council is working with the Central Government to help alleviate that suffering.
