A secondary school that promotes “respect for all” has been taken out of special measures.
Inspectors visited London Enterprise Academy in Tower Hamlets on July 5 and 6 and the report was published on October 27.
The Whitechapel school, previously rated ‘inadequate’ in 2019, received the ‘good’ rating in two areas (behaviour and attitudes and personal development) and the ‘requires improvement’ rating in the other two (quality of education and leadership and management).

Inspectors wrote in their report: “Pupils’ well-being and social development are taken seriously by all staff.
“Pupils not only feel safe, they are safe because of the attention the school gives to ensuring good behaviour.”
Inspectors continued: “Behaviour is managed effectively. The incidents of poor behaviour and fixed-term exclusions have fallen considerably. Attendance is strong…
“Leaders ensure that pupils’ well-being is given high priority. In-school counselling supports pupils’ mental health. Pupils said that they find this especially helpful.”

The report also commented that safeguarding procedures and records are well-organised and detailed and “[p]upils get the right support when they need it”.
Inspectors said that teaching had improved since the last inspection, with many pupils “achiev[ing] well academically”.
They added that there is still some way to go to ensure learning is consistently strong for all pupils, especially for those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) or those who speak English as an additional language.
Inspectors also said the school “has been hampered by a lack of capacity to develop the school’s curriculum”.
“However”, they added, “a series of senior appointments has improved leadership capacity.
“Senior and middle leaders’ work to improve the curriculum and how it is taught is paying dividends.”

The Oftsed report praised many teachers’ understandings of how to teach their students, resulting in strong pupil learning.
It noted, though, that there were inconsistencies in the way learning is organised, for example in the use of assessment to check pupils’ knowledge.
Although leaders and governors at London Enterprise Academy has identified reading as a priority, inspectors said “pupils’ literacy skills remain variable” and many students “read without the accuracy and fluency they need”.

London Enterprise Academy principal Ashid Ali said: “We welcomed the opportunity to show the inspectors the significant progress that has been made at the school since their last visit.
“They found that students are happy and are benefitting from our ambitious curriculum and after-school extra-curricular programme.
“Staff, parents and pupils at London Enterprise Academy continue to work together to ensure the school progresses at pace – we are proud of what we have achieved and excited about the journey ahead.”
